7 kitchen ordering mistakes that are expensive to fix later

Sockets, appliances, worktop height and four more things to settle before production.

A kitchen is ordered for many years, and most problems are built in at the design stage. Here are the mistakes we see most often — and how to avoid them.

1. Choosing appliances after the design

The oven, hob, dishwasher and fridge define the module sizes. If you buy appliances later, modules have to be redone. Pick your appliances, or at least the models, before the design is approved.

2. Not planning sockets and outlets

Sockets above the worktop, for appliances, lighting and the hood must be in the right places before installation. We hand over a utilities plan together with the design.

3. An uncomfortable worktop height

The standard height does not suit everyone. Choose it for the height of the person who cooks most.

4. Too few drawers

In base units, drawers are more convenient than shelves: you see everything and do not have to bend down and reach into the back.

5. Saving on hardware

Hinges and runners work every day. Cheap hardware is the first thing to sag and squeak.

6. Forgetting the work triangle

The sink, hob and fridge should be placed so you can move between them easily.

7. Not re-measuring before production

Room dimensions change after rough finishing. A final measurement before production is a must.
